8 ways to influence behavior

1. Restriction

Crate, stall, jail, Death Penalty, halter, tack, collar, tether.

2. Punishment

Happens after behavior is triggered. Punishment may interrupt behavior, but it doesn’t change the trigger. Punishment can create misplaced fear or aggression.

3. Negative reinforcement

New behavior happens to avoid potential of something aversive.

4. Extinction

Ignore it and it will go away. 

5. Incompatible behavior

Hard to do both behaviors at same time.

6. Put behavior on cue

Makes it less fun, like work, or can make it more fun, but creates stimulus control.

7. Shape absence of behavior

Make doing nothing rewarding.

8. Change Motivation

Change the ‘why’ the behavior happens.
